We’d like for you to get to know us! Welcome to the second in a series of “Get to Know Us” blog posts about the team at Ascend!
We recently sat down with Managing Partner and one of Ascends founders, Rich Herbst. Rich has “been here from the beginning,” when the company was founded in November 2004.
We’d like to thank Rich for his insightful answers to our “Get to Know the Team at Ascend” questions!
What do you do at Ascend?
RH - I lead the team and the company.
What was the most memorable part of your day today at work?
RH - Personal conversations with two of our client friends.
What’s the best advice you ever received?
RH - Stay true to who you really are. I’ve learned a lot from several people who really stayed true.
If you could have one superpower what would it be?
RH - To move things without touching them (like, there is no spoon).
What is something you have always wanted to try?
RH - To conduct a symphony.
If you could win a 'life-time supply' of anything what would you want it to be?
RH - Coffee!
What do you like to do on your birthday?
RH - Have a nice dinner with family and friends.
RH - The Empire Strikes Back, or maybe Harold & Maude
RH - Here’s a favorite short quote. They’re not sure who originally authored it, although some say it was Mark Twain:
“Dance like no one is watching. Sing like no one is listening. Love like you’ve never been hurt. And live like it’s heaven on Earth.”
This one’s longer, but it’s incredibly inspiring. It’s from Marianne Williamson’s book, A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of A Course in Miracles (1992):
"...Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
You’re playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
Latest book you read?
RH - Aristotle, actually. his Metaphysics.
The Metaphysics is one of the two deepest books there are (imho). I think it’s widely misinterpreted, though. I think it holds the keys to some of the deepest questions/mysteries.
The other super-deep book is the Hermetica. I love the big questions and the deep mysteries…. Could go on about that stuff for days…
